Fracture treatment and plaster care by Dr Sumesh Subramanian at OrthoCure Bone & Joint Speciality Clinic, Thirumullaivoyal, serving Ambattur, Avadi, and Annanur.
Digital X-ray, diagnosis, and stabilization (splint or plaster or cast) in one visit.
When should you go to a hospital ER?
If the bone is visible through the skin, if there is a head injury or unconsciousness, or if there is chest pain or difficulty breathing, please visit a major hospital Emergency Room immediately.
Not sure if it is a sprain or a fracture?
It can be hard to tell without an X-ray. Please visit us soon if any of these are present.
You heard a snap or crack during the injury.
There is immediate, severe swelling or bruising.
The limb looks crooked or misshapen.
You cannot put weight on the leg or foot.
We have on site Digital X-ray to confirm the diagnosis quickly, when clinically required.
Not every fracture needs surgery. Many fractures heal well with the right immobilization and follow up.
Dr Sumesh follows a conservative first approach, and surgery is discussed only when clearly needed.
Splinting, first stage
Often used immediately after injury to protect the limb and allow swelling to settle before a full cast.
Plaster of Paris
Traditional cast option. Useful when careful molding and stability are needed.
Fiberglass casts
Lightweight and durable. Dr Sumesh will advise what suits your fracture type.
Functional braces
For selected minor fractures, removable boots or braces can support earlier movement, when appropriate.
What fractures do we commonly treat?
Wrist and forearm fractures.
Ankle and foot fractures.
Clavicle fractures.
Finger and hand fractures.
Early stress fractures.
If you already have X-rays from elsewhere, please bring them along.
What should you do before coming?
Elevate the injured limb.
Use a cold pack briefly, with a cloth barrier.
Do not attempt self reduction.
Avoid eating heavy meals if surgery might be needed later.
A short, safe first aid plan helps, but the priority is timely assessment.
Common questions?
Do you have Digital X-ray facilities here?
Yes. We have a modern Digital X-ray unit. We can diagnose the fracture, show you the images, and apply a splint or cast in one visit, when appropriate.
Do all fractures need surgery?
No. Many fractures heal well with proper immobilization. Surgery is discussed only when the fracture pattern is unstable, displaced, or involves joints in a way that needs fixation.
How long does a cast stay on?
It depends on the bone and fracture pattern. Many wrist fractures need about four to six weeks. Some ankle fractures can need around six weeks. Follow up is planned based on healing.
Can I come only for an X-ray?
This is a clinic linked service. A brief clinical review is advised so the correct views are taken and the study is used meaningfully.
This page is a general guide. Final decisions on imaging and treatment are always made after examination by Dr Sumesh Subramanian.
